At the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz it is possible to gain a PhD in the following departments:

- Medicine and Dentistry,
- Humanities and Social Sciences,
- Mathematics,
- Natural Sciences and Sports Science.
In the future it will probably also be possible to gain a PhD in Music (Music Education and Music Theory).
Before you can get started with your PhD in Mainz you must meet with various requirements - formal, subject-related or, where necessary, language requirements - e.g. you will be required to verify that you have graduated in either a German or an equivalent university course of study in a foreign country (e.g. diploma, Magister Artium, Master or state examination). Furthermore, it is required that you have a supervisor during your studies.
